The oud is a beautiful string instrument that has been played for thousands of years across the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. It looks a little like a guitar but has a rounder body, a shorter neck, and no frets, which gives it a warm, deep, and very expressive sound.

Because it has no frets, the oud can play all the subtle notes and scales (called maqamat) that make Turkish, Arabic, and Greek music so unique. It’s sometimes called the “grandfather of the guitar,” and today it’s still one of the most loved instruments for both traditional music and new, creative fusions.
