The Tin Whistle is a simple six-hole flute, widely used in traditional music from Ireland and Scotland. Despite its apparent simplicity, it is a deeply expressive instrument, capable of producing melodies that bring a modern flair to Celtic traditions.

Its sweet, bright tone has become a hallmark of Celtic music, with renowned performers such as Carlos Núñez (Spain), Julie Fowlis (UK), and Brian Finnegan (UK) showcasing its versatility and charm on international stages.

Whistles are made from various materials—wood, plastic, and most commonly, metal—which gives them their distinctive sound: a soft but powerful voice where the wind itself seems to sing.

Today, whistles are available in many different keys and sizes, but the most commonly used is the D whistle, and that is the one we’ll use to begin learning in our course.
